When you think of Philadelphia, you probably imagine cheesesteaks, the Liberty Bell, or maybe Rocky running up the Art Museum steps. But nestled among these iconic Philly staples is something a little stranger—and definitely sweeter: the chocolate covered onion.
Yep, you read that right. And at Mueller Chocolate Co., we’re proud to be the home of this unforgettable treat.
A Comedic Beginning
Mueller Chocolate Co. has been making chocolate in Philadelphia since the 1980s, when Glenn and Theresa Mueller first opened their chocolate shop. We have been in the Historic Reading Terminal Market since the mid-90s. We’ve always had a playful side (see also: chocolate body parts), but the chocolate-covered onion started as a total joke.
Back in 1983, comedian Bob Nelson was filming a sketch show across the street from their shop, then located at the Bourse Building, called Double Muppets Hold the Onions. He needed a prop for a gag—something sweet on the outside and shocking on the inside. Enter: the chocolate covered onion. Glenn whipped up a batch, and the rest is hilarious history.
What started as a one-time prank became a viral sensation. Over the years, our onion has appeared on Good Morning America, Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern, and even in Ripley’s Believe It or Not. Philly locals and tourists alike stop by to get a glimpse—or a bite—of the city’s quirkiest souvenir.
What It Tastes Like (And Who It’s For)
Let’s be real: the chocolate covered onion isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s exactly what it sounds like—sweet, creamy chocolate on the outside, raw onion on the inside. The result? A bold, unforgettable flavor clash that makes the perfect gift for someone with a great sense of humor (or a really adventurous palate).
It’s one of our most talked-about items, and a must-try if you’re exploring Philly or shopping for something truly one-of-a-kind.
